Video Game Cities

The most memorable fictional locales.

One of the reasons why it's easy to get so swept up in a game that you begin to forget that the rest of the world exists is that the environment in your game is so darn immersive and exciting. After all, we can't go running around our own neighborhood willy-nilly terrorizing the townsfolk (well, we could, if we wanted to spend the evening in a detaining cell). Here are some of the most interesting video game locales of all time.

Vice City, Grand Theft Auto

This tempestuous, crime-ridden city was based on Miami in the 1980s, a time when the city was a major port for the shipment of cocaine. Naturally, the garish setting made the perfect backdrop for a game based on crushing everyone else around you to get to the top.

Hyrule, The Legend of Zelda

Link's hometown, nestled within the hills of Hyrule, is chock full of his pointy-eared brethren. Its most notable point of interest, of course, is the majestic Hyrule Castle, where Link hops about its roof as a wolf and eventually ends up in the final dungeon in Twilight Princess.

Silent Hill, Silent Hill

This eerily quiet town appears to be abandoned at first, but a further peek into its thick fog reveals a slew of disfigured demons and other assorted baddies. Although it's a mystery as to where exactly the town is located, the movie has suggested West Virginia, while the game hints at New England.
