There's a lot of things that make Asian horror flicks significantly creepier than our own. This isn't to knock on American-made horror movies, they just happen to do it a little...differently. For example, there tends to be a lot more children in Asian horror movies, particularly females. The female roles carry a lot more depth than their American counterparts. And then, of course, is the no-holds-barred gorefest that typically ensues, but it's usually done in a darkly creative way and not without reason, as opposed to the "Let's make everyone in the theater vomit before the closing credits" attitude that Eli Roth types seem to have.
That being said, I'm not going to hate on The Ring or The Grudge, but anyone who's seen the originals know that some of the magic (and key plot points) dissolve when a movie is remade. This year alone, we've already seen remakes One Missed Call and The Eye. Now we have Shutter, a movie that was originally released in Thailand four years ago.
