Sun, wind, water and...waste?! Before you begin thinking that this is a Captain Planet public service announcement gone horribly wrong, let me explain: you'd be amazed at the variety of natural resources that can provide energy and won't muck up our planet. New environmental technologies are slowly but surely making this possible. Here's a breakdown of alternative energy sources and the science that makes them work.

Solar Power
Solar power is produced by capturing sunlight with solar panels made up of solar cells and then converting it into electricity. It's clean, it saves you money on your electricity bill, and unless the sun decides to burn up, it's pretty reliable. Thanks to battery back-up systems, you can even store power so you don't have to live in total darkness after sunset. Although building a solar panel can be costly, there aren't a lot of disadvantages to using it. (Unless you plan on driving a solar powered car, which tend to move at tortoise-like speeds.)
