Make Your Own Prom Dress

Turns heads!

A girl's biggest prom stress is finding the perfect dress; shopping at endless stores, boutiques, and looking at prom themed magazines. It's one of the biggest events before graduation and one of the last memories of high school.

Let's face it, prom dresses are expensive. Also, everything else that goes along with the process; hair make-up, shoes, and accessories(not everyone will have Mommy and Daddy paying their expenses). As prom season approaches prices go up. The best time to buy prom dresses are during off seasons, summer and fall, so heads up for those attending next year.

Why not try something different and make your own dress? No one ever wants to show up to their prom and see another person wearing the same dress. Pretty embarrassing.
You can be the designer. You spend time doodling pictures in history classes instead of taking notes, anyway. Sketch your dream dress on paper (several times).

Drawing your dream Prom dress is all well and good, but theres one problem-- you don't know how to sew. Who says you even have to sew in the first place? Remember the duct tape dress from MTV's Made: I Want to be Homecoming Queen?

Be creative. You don't have to construct a brand new dress. You can re-work an old dress, or take fabric from other clothing you haven't used forever. You can buy dress patterns at your local fabric store. The patterns will guide you. While you're at that store, buy accessories; things that will make your dress unique and reflect your personality (you can also purchase extras at a craft store).

Make something, out of nothing.

Have fun. If it ends being up a disastrous dress, well at least you can say you tried.

i remember that! the dress your mom made for you sounds cute =)
My mother made my dress. I found a really cute ball skirt, left
overs from New Years at Macy's. My mother put a really cute
chiffon overskirt on it. She then took and old black velveteen
dress and turned that into a shirt, a tank style. I did however
graduate high school in 2000, and at this time, it was the style
to wear two seperate pieces of varying colors. More like a stylish
top with a fluffy ball skirt.
