The shows that Brits can't get enough of.

If there's one thing that everyone can agree on, it's that accents of any kind are a beautiful thing. One of the most beloved here in the States is most likely, without a doubt, the British accent. We can't help it; hearing one is enough to make us swoon at the very sound of it. If you want to enjoy the accent, but don't have the finances right now to take a trip across the pond, try renting some of these television shows available on DVD featuring many great Brit actors and actresses.

For the lover of science fiction, there's of course BBC's long running show Doctor Who. Need proof of how good it is? The show holds the world record by Guinness for the longest running sci-fi series in TV history. The Doctor, who has been played by 10 different actors since the series began back in 1963, is a time traveler who must use his wits and the assistance of his companion to solve problems across time and the universe. The current Doctor is portrayed by Scottish actor David Tennant, and his companion by famous British comedian Catherine Tate. The series has launched the careers of many other actors however, including former companion Freema Agyeman and former pop star Billie Piper.

The show also produced an extremely successful spin off series, Torchwood. Imagine CSI and the X-Files were able to make a child, and this is what you would get: a team of officers from the Torchwood Institute solving crimes committed by alien beings and keeping an eye on a rift in the time-space continuum. The show was an extremely popular hit, especially with many fans who loved the mix of humor and drama the show creates, many claiming it to be reminiscent of shows such as Buffy or Angel. In fact, in the second series which has just begun to air, James Marsters who played Spike on both shows appears. Both of these shows currently have DVD sets out and can also be seen occasionally on Sci-Fi Channel or NBCUni HD.

As a born and bred UK citizen, I can officially say that
Footballer's Wives is utter crass.
My absolute favorite show right now is Torchwood. And you do NOT
have to be a fan of science fiction to like it. Just give it a
chance. While it is a science fiction show, it is also a drama
with a strong group of characters. Plus there is a LOT of eye
candy on this show. The article states that its 2nd season is
just starting, but it actually just ended its 2nd season on BBC
America (repeats still air Sat. at 9).
Doctor Who is also a great show. A litle bit lighter than
Torchwood, it is a show that you could watch with younger siblings
in the room. Every episode is a satisfying mix of comedy and
drama. David Tennant's Doctor is irresistable. He's funny, but
can turn into a very dark man when he is crossed, which happens
from time to time. Its new season starts this Friday, the 18th,
on the SciFi network while previous seasons repeat on BBC
America.
This brings me to my 3rd favorite show: Top Gear. Yes, Top gear
is a "car show", but it is so much more. The show follows the
three hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond, as
they perform tasks such as a road trip here in the states using
cars that they each had to purchase with $1000, cross the English
Channel in an amphibious car (which they had to make amphibious
themselves), turning less than desireable cars into limos, and
even converting a car into a shuttle (which almost actually
worked!). They have a segment in which they "place a star in
their reasonably-priced car" and let them loose around a track and
put their times on a board. This show ALWAYS leaves me laughing
and I'm sure that you need only to watch it once to get hooked.
It airs on BBC America on Monday nights with repeats on Saturdays.
