Bon Iver-For Emma, Forever Ago

I hate Bon Iver.

Or more specifically I hate Justin Vernon. Just like many people I know who have tried to write songs, I am intensely jealous of Justin Vernon and what he was able to do under the nom de plume Bon Iver. He secluded himself and was able to write songs that are both unbelievably beautiful and intensely personal.

Media and culture bombard us as a society, with any song being a click and $.99 away. Working in the music business where it is my job to consume this culture, I have become even more jaded. But then I saw Bon Iver perform live and I was blown away. I never heard any of his music and he was just an opener but still I was floored. His performance was just him alone on a stage singing is heart out and it was apparent everyone else was equally as stunned. He is the type of performer that forces the viewer to immediately tell everyone they know about him.

What is told is always the same two things, that his music is literally breathtaking and the story behind his creation. The story, which has been spread throughout almost every music blog in the country, effectively intensifies the experience of listening to Bon Iver. Justin before recording the album broke-up with his band, broke-up with his girlfriend, and was bed ridden for almost 3 months from a severe case of mononucleosis (yes the kissing disease). So his decision was to escape it all and move to his father's cabin in the deep Wisconsin wilderness for the winter. He had no plan to create music, just a desire to be alone.
