Politics as usual with this Missouri-based quartet.
This New York-based quartet is prepared to rock in '09.
The hard rock quintet gets sinister on "Cinco Diablo."
Sticking to what they do best on their fifth album.

Say Anything: Live at Nokia Theatre

The story of a hipster behind enemy lines.

Before the show on March 29th, I kind of hated Say Anything, and not for snobby music critic reason but for personal ones.

Reason 1: My ex-girlfriend loves the band, and especially started listening to them more around the demise of our relationship. I know this might seem immature or just plain silly, but music sometimes can be ingrained with specific feelings that don't go away regardless of time.

Reason 2: Their song "Admit It!!!" really gets my goat. It is one of their more famous songs and it is an attack on the entire elitist hipster culture that I vaguely identify with. Though the song hit close to home on many accounts (i.e. my need to label things as post-modern and my elegantly disheveled hair demands), it bothers more because it is actually guilty of what they accuse hipsters of. Not to mention said ex-girlfriend used to use and still uses the song to make fun of me (Okay, that's enough talking about her).

Still, I thought I would try to give the guys a fair shot that Saturday night but apparently they didn't need it.
Nokia Theatre is a pretty decent sized venue that has no personality whatsoever. It is a Times Square-afied version of a concert hall; meaning its glossy, clean, and edgeless, a complete contrast to the glorified grime of CBGB's where Say Anything forefathers played in what seems like centuries ago. Nevertheless, the boys brought enough frenetic energy to make it ignorable.
