Lessons from Mom

You do NOT need to follow the latest trends

At 23, I still look for my mother's approval when we shop. I will admit, I always pick up the trendy pieces, you know the ones that will probably be out of fashion in the next ten minutes, and while I revel in how great it would be to own a pair of those overall shorts or patent leather leggings, my mother always brings me back to reality. Where are you going to actually wear that? I realize that my bedroom will probably be the only place these items will see the light of day. For years, my mom has advocated to stick to the basic and the simple. Great fitting jeans, classic black pants, and solid shirts that lay like a second skin will always look good and be in style. You don't have to be a plain Jane, but stick to your own style and don't let others dictate what you just have to have.

Check out discount stores first

Of course boutiques with their gorgeous displays and of-the-minute fashions can tempt us even with their way-too-expensive price tags, but my mother has taught me to look somewhere else for pricey duds. Discount stores normally have the same stuff for a much lower price. Who cares if the dress you bought is from so and so's winter 2005 collection as long as it looks good and is in good condition, why should it matter. Many treasures can be found if you look hard enough.
