Lessons from Mom

Patience is virtuous

While I love to shop, I'll admit I get cranky and on top of that overzealous. Skipping whole racks out of laziness is not beyond me, yet my mother who is almost in a trance-like state will peruse every hanger. Oftentimes this is the single way she finds the greatest things. She looks for things no one else has the patience to do. To ensure you will do this too; shop with friends and on a day where you can give your whole focus to the task at hand. Think of it like looking for a needle in a haystack, only now you can wear that needle on your date next Friday night.

Accessories are key

It is amazing how much you can dress up a white shirt with great heels and a gorgeous necklace. My mom really taught me that jewelry can be worn almost like a second garment. With this method, wearing the same outfit with different shoes or belts or even bracelets can make you look like you are wearing a totally different outfit or allow you to go to a range of events!

Be Comfortable

As much as I get annoyed at her about this, my mother always makes me sit, stand, walk around and basically do everything short of cartwheels in a store to make sure the dress, the shoe or the pants I am planning on buying will stand up in real life.

Case in point? Well, I am a huge huge fan of really tall heels. Being 5'3, the taller the better right? Well, going against her good judgment, in my rebellious teen days, I decided to spend my money on a pair of really expense really gorgeous five-inch stilettos. I loved them. If you could be in a relationship with shoes, I would marry this pair. They were the one. Or so I thought. Fast-forward three days later, and I can barely walk from the blisters these "great" shoes gave me. I think I was in flats for the rest of the month and since then have been more conservative about my heel height choosing. It is better to go lower for comfort than be pained from higher than high heels.
