What is it about hats that make them so intimidating? You know you look good in one, you practice how to tilt your head for hours and you style your hair so it falls perfectly under that fedora you've finally decided to buy. But then just as you're about to leave the house it happens...you take it off, thinking, "Maybe next time..." Amazing how an effortless little object whose very function is to make you less concerned about your appearance can actually make you more obsessive. Even harder is when you're the only one in your circle of friends who takes leaps with fashion choices. I know it, I've been there and I've done that.
I recently bought my first fedora and paired it with casual jeans tucked into boots and a loose, effortless shirt. In the city, everyone loved it. Back in my small town of Staten Island, my friends called me names like Indiana Jones and Sherlock Holmes, but then they reinforced the fact that it looked "hot." My advice to you is to buy a hat you love that you can throw on with something casual and wear it alone to a widely public place that's mixed with trends (i.e. the city). You'll get the hang of how to walk, talk and eventually, strut confidently, with this new addition to your head so that when it comes time to wear it in front of people you DO know, you won't care about their taunting remarks (because secretly, they're just jealous they didn't have what it takes to carry it). After your first fedora, you'll want to experiment with all typed of hats, caps and scarves and you won't believe how many people will compliment you. Out to dinner with a friend, the weather was terrible. I stopped by his apartment first and I threw on one of his newsboy caps- it was the icing on the cake to my downtown "hanging with the cool kids" outfit (skinny jeans, converse, and a tee shirt). We went to a pretty trendy place, and the best feeling in the world was not having to worry about my hair.
