Three are left standing on the Idol stage to battle it out for the big title. David Archuleta, a fan favorite from the beginning of the season, has entertained the masses week after week, even having huge fan support despite off weeks. David Cook was an unknown and thought to be an early boot when the competition first started and a tiff with Simon, but after his 80's week performance of "Hello" turned heads, he rose to become someone to beat. Syesha Mercado was a force to be reckoned with, never getting the best critiques and being in the bottom three almost every week, but knocked out favorites to end up the last girl standing. How would they fare during this semi final round? Let's get straight to the show.
Round 1 - The Judges Choose
The first three songs give use the Idols singing a song one of the judges handpicked for them. First up is David Archuleta, singing Billy Joel's classic "And So It Goes" chosen by Paula Abdul. He does sing very well, but as Simon points out, it's predictable. With the finale on the line, you have to step up your game on a night like this and show why you deserve to be around. David A. performs well, but doesn't offer anything new or original to the song that Billy Joel hasn't already done.
Up next, Syesha Mercado. The (surprisingly) last girl left standing is given "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys, courtesy of judge Randy Jackson. It's been apparent all week that Syesha is most likely out, so she basically has to give it everything she's got in order to knock out one of the David's. She does a fantastic job singing, though with the song being so recent, it's hard to differentiate between her version and Keys.
Last up is David Cook, and Simon Cowell chose Roberta Flacks classic "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." This was the hardest song choice, as the other two contestants got songs in their range while this is not a rock song Cook is used to singing. That being said, David did fantastic and knocked this song out of the ballpark.
Round 1 goes to David Cook, with Syesha second, David Archuleta a distant third.
