From boy-band member to teen heart throb to R&B sensation, Jesse McCartney has grown up in the spotlight. Maybe it's his boyish good looks, his versatile talent or his warm personality that makes him a natural star. Whatever the reason, Jesse has "it," and with the success of his new album Departure, he proves that he has more than enough of "it" to go around.
Departure is Jesse's third disc, and if you've heard it, then you probably realize that it's a bit different than his previous releases. On this album, Jesse sheds the pop-rock sound of 2006's Right Where You Want Me and incorporates more of an R&B and hip-hop-oriented vibe. This turn towards a new style may seem like a recipe for disaster, but Jesse effortlessly pulls it off, and his triumph over the industry has already begun.
"Leavin'," the album's lead single, just cracked the Billboard top-10 singles chart, making it one of his most successful songs to date. With the release of Departure on May 20, Jesse has a good shot at turning his third album into his most popular effort yet.
Jesse may have the music industry in the palm of his hand, but he has been keeping busy with a laundry list of other projects. He hooked up with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder to write "Bleeding Love," the massive smash performed by Leona Lewis, making him the next big thing on the songwriting circuit.
He also made an appearance in the latest Alvin and the Chipmunks film, but you may not have recognized him. For his role, Jesse went into the studio and recorded his voice for Theodore, the adorable runt of the three singing cartoon brothers. The film's success has spawned a sequel set for 2009, in which Jesse will reprise his role as the hungry little food addict.
Kiwibox caught up with Jesse to talk about what to expect on his third album, what it's like to hear Leona Lewis sing your song and how he keeps himself grounded as his popularity continues to rise.
