Fun Suggestions for What to Do with Your Summer

Whether you're able to afford an expensive vacation or not, we've pulled together some great ways to spend some (most, or all) of your summer vacation to take full advantage of your time! Maybe you have a set goal for the summer and want ideas on how to achieve it. Either way, check out these suggestions for summer pastimes!

Goal: I want to lose weight this summer.
Hit the gym - frequently! Maybe you can't afford that platinum membership and personal trainer, but most colleges and even some high schools have an open gym for anyone with an acceptable school ID, and you can go as often as their hours allow you to! If you don't have this option available to you, sign up for a summer-long class in your area to teach you aerobics basics, dance, or any other rather strenuous activity that will keep you busy at least 3-4 days out of the week.

If all else fails, go to your local retailer and pick up a pair of hand-weights. For beginners, start with something easy like three pounds. For those of you with a fair amount of strength, start with five or eight-pounders. If you've bulked up in the past and just want to stay at the top of your game, try a pair of tens, or whatever you're capable of lifting frequently. Make up your own exercise routine that gets your biceps (bicep curls), triceps (tricep curls overhead or while squatting, lifted behind you), shoulders (arms at right angles like a "y" and pushed upward), chest (same shoulder stance, but pushed inward), and even legs (squats)!

First off... if it's summer and you want to lose weight, it's much
more reasonable (and cheaper!) to just get outside and get moving,
rather than joining a gym. Play sports, garden, go on hikes, go
swimming, walk your dog...

Second... having a goal of getting a tan is a TERRIBLE idea.
People don't seem to understand the real danger of skin cancer. It
happens, and it's happening more and more to young people. If
you're outside, wear sunscreen and don't risk your health.

The other goals are reasonable. If you want to make a difference
and accomplish something, volunteer. The more you do for others,
the better you'll feel about yourself as well.
