Politics as usual with this Missouri-based quartet.
This New York-based quartet is prepared to rock in '09.
The hard rock quintet gets sinister on "Cinco Diablo."

Jenny Owen Youngs - Batten the Hatches

Simplicity, smarts and spunk make one honest album

If Sarah McLachlan's all-girl music tour Lilith Fair were still in existence, Jenny Owen Youngs would certainly be on the bill. Her first full-length album, Batten the Hatches, shows her cheeky way of mixing words with her instrumental skills (playing the guitar, bass, banjo, flute and tuba). But don't brand this Montclair, N.J.-based singer-songwriter as your every day band geek.

With a voice like that of Beth Orton and Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power), Youngs writes honest songs that tug on your heartstrings. Her lyrics are straightforward and simple but still hit the mark every time. Songs like "From Here" and "Voice on Tape" deal with broken relationships caused by failures, problems or incompatibility. Lots of her songs are concerned with love, but like most songs about the heart, her music is as truthful as it comes.
