Multi-talented actresses are no stranger to the entertainment industry. Throughout history, Hollywood's leading ladies have tried their hand at juggling both an acting and music career, sometimes incorporating the two specialties into a single medium by performing in musicals or music-inspired films. Hollywood wouldn't be the same place if Julie Andrews didn't make history in Mary Poppins or Marilyn Monroe hadn't belted out a note or two in her lifetime.

These ladies have set the stage for future actresses to follow in their footsteps, and today, everyone from Lindsey Lohan to Hilary Duff has both acting and singing careers. But in the past year, film's indie starlets have taken a dive into making music that isn't pop, and the results have been mixed. Scarlett Johannson, Zooey Deschanel, Jena Malone and Juliette Lewis have all gone into the studio to record albums, and results have ranged from spectacular to just plain mediocre. Here's a look at the dual careers of these actresses and vocalists.
