It all comes down to this. David Archuleta vs. David Cook. The rocker vs. the powerhouse. Who will come out on top?In one of the oddest opening this show has ever seen, we're given the David's facing off against each other boxing style. Look, let's be honest, if it was a boxing match, Cook would pummel Archie into a come in the first five minutes. But this is a singing match, so let's skip the witty banter and recap of who the contestants are. If you've been watching you know all about them, know they're two completely different styles, and know there can only be one winner. On a quick note, why was it that in the opening montage of "winners," they showed Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Chris Daughtry? The first two makes sense, but Daughtry came in fourth place, and they seem to have forgotten the other winners.
Round 1
In Round 1, Clive Davis shows up to chose the song for the Idols. It's slightly disturbing to see Davis, even though he is one of the most influential people in American music history, he looks to be doing his best impersonation of Weekend At Bernie's. In an unexpected move too, Andrew Lloyd Webber, who was the best and most honest coach probably ever, comes by to aid the kids.
Davis gives Cook U2's big hit "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," a rock song that talks about still searching for what you need in life obviously. David rocks the heck out of it, even going into the audience at the end. You can tell he knows he has good stage presence and would be a great artist to see live on tour. The judges seem to think it was good too, though Randy felt it wasn't as good as he could have done. However, Randy also claimed this to be the best battle of 2007. I think he switched cups with Paula, who seems much more lucid than ever.
David Archuleta meanwhile? Of course he's singing another ballad. This time it's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," one of Elton John's biggest hits and another Idol staple. He did a good job singing it, but for me again it was just another ballad. The judges praised (honestly though, they over praised), and Simon declared round 1 went to Archuleta. Maybe we were watching different shows then, because Round 1 in my eyes went to Cook.
