The coolest thing about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is the fact that, for the first time ever, you get to play as a Pokemon. There's no doubt that this will be a big draw for people who are intimidated by other people's vast Pokemon collections, or are just plain weirded out by most RPG games. (I happen to be both.)Before you embark on your cave-dwelling adventure, you first have to take a personality test to determine which Pokemon you will be. Then, the game asks that you place your fingertip on the touch screen to determine your aura. Strange, but okay. According to Mystery Dungeon, I am a Pokemon monkey named Chimchar and I radiate a vibrant pink aura. Take that as you will.
You'll get a Poke-buddy of your choice (I thought Totodile was particularly cute) and then you'll be good to go. Your journey begins after your friend finds you passed out on a beach, and then requests your help in recovering their most prized possession. Eventually you'll both join Wigglytuff's Guild as a team of explorers and you'll take on bigger tasks in more dangerous caves. When you start out, there are only a limited amount of moves you can use to attack an enemy, but you'll quickly accumulate more moves and countless items as you take on more missions. The game involves turn-based fighting, so it does help to know your Pokemon types. For example, bird Pokemon are good to use against bug Pokemon, and so on. You're in charge of keeping yourself and your team healthy, and a variety of items found along the way will help you do that.
