In the first five minutes of The Happening, we learn the inherent dangers of pointy hair accessories when they fall into the wrong hands. It's confusing as to whether this scene is meant to be shocking or hilarious, but either way, the rest of the movie follows this same pattern.
M. Night Shyamalan wastes no time submerging us in this bizarre end-of-times nightmare, where a mysterious force stops people dead in their tracks and causes them to commit suicide. The first occurrence is in New York's Central Park, and within hours spreads to other widely populated areas in the northeast. Over in Philadelphia, biology teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Walhberg) gets wind of the epidemic and dismisses his class, abandoning a discussion about the sudden disappearance of area bees. Elliot and his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel) pack their bags and head to the train station, where they meet up with Elliot's co-worker Julian (John Leguizamo) and his young daughter Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez). Since the threat is airborne, the plan is to head to rural Pennsylvania and wait out the epidemic until it's safe to return to the city. But when the train loses communication, they find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere, and their road to safety appears to be littered with corpses.
