Bonnaroo 2008: Hip-Hop Recap

Beats and rhymes hit hard at the rock-based festival

Hip-hop was scarce at Bonnaroo, but Kiwibox happened to swing by a couple of rap performances to round out the trifecta of genres at the festival (the other two being rock and folk/jazz, obviously). Beats and rhymes were difficult to come by, being that the scheduled hip-hop acts conflicted with one another. But forgoing certain rap acts most definitely paid off, even if it involved seeing fewer performers in the long run. Here's a rundown of the hip-hop performances we watched.

M.I.A. - 6/13, 6:30 - 8:00 P.M., That Tent

This was probably one of the best shows at Bonnaroo. With the tent overflowing with bodies, M.I.A. took the stage a couple minutes late, but hit hard with her party-starting performance. Crowd members shook their stuff to cuts from Kala and Arular, particularly getting down to tracks like "Bamboo Banga" and her breakout hit "Galang." M.I.A. rocked neon attire and made the show one of her best, meaning that she was going out with a bang considering she blurted out that this performance would be her last. Even if she was just being facetious, we were still there to get some ace concert footage, so be on the lookout for some YouTube action later this week.
