Miri Ben-Ari, otherwise known as The Hip-Hop Violinist, is a marvel in the rap industry. Using her instrument as her voice, Miri has gone from playing in the background on Kanye West's album The College Dropout and tracks by John Legend and Janet Jackson to hitting back with her debut rap record The Hip-Hop Violinist in 2005. Although the Israeli musician got her start on stage at the Apollo Theater in New York City, she is now Queen of the strings and has even been crowned an Apollo Legend by the historical venue.
Now, Miri is hard at work on her upcoming album and promoting her chart-topping instrumental single "Symphony of the Brotherhood," a thumping track dedicated to the struggle for equality that features audio clips by the great Martin Luther King, Jr. Backstage at the Apollo, Miri sat down with Kiwibox before hitting the stage to perform "Symphony" with the Harlem Boys Choir and Nina Sky in celebration of Israel's 60th year of independence. Miri warmed up for her gig by discussing the importance of political talk in hip-hop, how her instrument is her voice and gives some hints as to who might help her out on her sophomore hip-hop album.
