N*SYNC, LFO, 98 Degrees... Remember them? Back in the late '90s, these boy bands dominated the charts, churning out hit after hit as adoring fans plastered posters of the fresh-faced boys on their bedroom walls and bought CDs by the boatload. But then the boy band craze began to fade away, and as the members broke off to pursue their own solo ventures, the groups of young entertainers seemed to altogether vanish from the music scene.
Just when you thought that boy bands have faded away for good, Varsity Fanclub is keeping the movement alive. The five self-dubbed "best friends" may be the only boys in the music industry these days that are bringing back the classic boy band format. Thomas Fiss, Jayk Purdy, Drew Ryan Scott, Bobby Edner and David Lei Brandt make up the group, rehearsing and recording hard as they prepare for the release of their debut album Varsity.
With their song "Future Love" blowing up on Radio Disney, the boys plan to release a music video of the track sometime in July and finish up recording the rest of their album. The record is already shaping up to be chock full of hits, with songs recorded with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder (who co-wrote Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" with Jesse McCartney), Beyonce's lil' sis Solange Knowles and studio wizards The Underdogs (producers of Justin Timberlake and Omarion).
Lindsay Streisfeld, winner of the Kiwibox contest for a chance to interview Varsity Fanclub, talked with members of the group about their upcoming album and tour. David, Jayk and Bobby took turns answering her questions, giving her advice on how to jump-start her performing career, why Jayk has a fetish for a fresh pair of socks and who's on rotation in his car's CD changer. Listen below to hear Lindsay's exclusive interview with Varsity Fanclub!
