What Does This Country Really Stand For?

Issue #3: A Sense of Pride and Over-Confidence
Our country, in the past century or so, has grown increasingly confident of its ability to stop warring within other countries and create functional governments that mirror our own. However, Middle-Eastern countries, currently and previously being "invaded" by Americans, have been in existence far longer than the United States and have been functioning with different types of governments and practices without our help. Why has the United States decided to force their traditions and ideas on other countries, assuming our system works for everyone? According to current problems in government and our economy, it's hardly working for us!

Our nation is split many ways for presidential candidates and the previous incumbent, George W. Bush. Once a revered leader, Bush has taken a nose-dive in the political support category because of the current Iraq situation and the crumbling state of the nation's economy. Unemployment is at an all-time high, as well as gas and grocery prices. One can hardly afford to take a day off work due to sickness or family emergency. New candidates for the presidential campaign prove to be a surprise to us all. For the first time ever, a minority and a woman are present on the ballot. Is this country ready for something new?

Btw, the part about the Civil War is completely wrong and, among
other problems, the Civil War was fought between the United
STATES, they were considered states after 1783, the end of the
revolutionary war.
Wow, this article is way too cynical - even for me. Economies go
through cycles - its not *just* the government having problems, or
not working for us. Americans are still way better off than most
of the rest of the world - even with all the problems the US has.

But... unemployment is not at a record high, that was during the
Great Depression. Some of America's cockiness comes from the fact
we preserved democracy in Europe, twice and helped rebuild stable,
thriving, democracies. We prevented a WWIII and a nuclear war.

American law is also based on Common Law which is why it seems
there is intermingling in church and state, but its more societal
norms. Like... we also won't support virgins being sacrificed to a
deity - its not religious persecution. There's always a dialogue
between society and laws though - who is leading who - laws helped
the Civil Rights Movement, laws were ahead of most of society.

The Constitution isn't meant to be followed to a T - if it doesn't
say it well then the government shouldn't intervene - its the
spirit of the Constitution, liberty and equality that we are in
constant pursuit of.
