How to Vintage Shop

What's Old is New Again

The first step to a successful quest is to draw from an inspiration. I'm madly inspired by old Hollywood starlets. Are you more of an Eva Gardner or Marlene Dietrich? Are you looking for that perfect feminine dress or just a cool vintage rock tee? Maybe you're just looking for a vintage designer handbag for you to rock with your favorite jeans and tank. These are some important questions to ask yourself before embarking on your vintage excursion. If you're not from the NY area no need for a panic attack, I have a bunch of online stores that will soon be added to your favorites. You also can do some discovering in your Grandmother's closet!

One of my favorite downtown places to shop in NYC is Screaming Mimi's. When I first discovered this store I felt as if I had walked into a different dimension. With its entertaining decor and huge selection of hand picked vintage clothing and accessories I knew I'd be doing some damage that day. I kept in mind some of my favorite designers and tried to find vintage pieces from their collections or stuff that just looked like it. I definitely picked the right day to shop! I came across a vintage Fendi bag, a Gucci scarf, a shirt that was exceptionally reminiscent of Comme de Garcons, a super tight and super sexy purple leather skirt, and the most amazing snake skin belt. Needless to say I was eating Ramen Noodles that night for dinner. If you can't make it to the downtown shop you can check out this shopping wonderland at screamingmimis.com.

My next discovery in the world of vintage was back-in-style.com. This site can be overwhelming so I suggest sipping a calming tea while browsing. My patience paid off because I found one of my most treasured vintage finds of all! A Yves Saint Laurent hat circa 1980...RIP Yves! Vintage accessories can really change a tee shirt and jeans into a conversation piece. My hat now safely sits on display on my bookshelf in my apartment. It only comes out on special days and nights since its Father has passed!

Real vintage come from older days, rare finds from thrift stores. Not over priced items.
