The List is a serious thriller about a lawyer named Renny Jacobson (Chuck Carrington from JAG), who heads home for his father's funeral and to collect his share from the will. He finds out that his dad left him nothing except for a place in a secret society called the Covenant List of South Carolina, Ltd. This is a group of descendants of men who formed a group after the Civil War in order to keep their money and make sure it is passed down to their kin.He is brought to their meeting where he meets several old but wealthy men who are also on "The List" of inheritors of the wealth. He meets Jo Johnston (Hilarie Burton from One Tree Hill) and one particularly odd old man, Desmond LaRochette (Malcom Macdowell). He also discovers that within the group there are shady deals being made and secrets being kept from fellow members, along with mysterious deaths. The story follows his quest in unveiling the truth about "The List" as well as his quest for discovering what truly matters to him in life.
Though the synopsis sounds intriguing the film itself went very slowly, to the point that I was hoping for the end to come. The first 3 quarters of the movie are drawn out and strange, and only at the very end does the film captivate you.
However, one point of interest the film held was the power of good versus evil, and especially, how prayer defeats evil. It is a recurrent theme in the movie and is used in various instances to save both Renny and his love-interest, Jo. Christianity, Judaism, and even voodoo play prominent roles in the film. The spiritual side of this film was the most interesting.
While the original plot of murder, mystery, and prayer sounds as if it will make an extremely exciting film, it truly did not. The List is not for everyone, but if you have an interest in the spirituality aspect of the film, then definitely go for it.
