Explorers are some of the most important members of our society. I'm not just referring to the explorers who find new lands in uncharted waters, but to all explorers who have brought a new discovery, big or small, to light. At this time, I'm sure that many people know who Amelia Earhart is. You may even recognize names such as Isak Dinesen or Gertrude Bell. But I'm willing to bet most of you have yet to learn about other female explorers like Alexandra David-Neel, Florence Von Sass Baker, Isabella Bird Bishop, or Harriet Chalmers Adams.
Women, especially young women, need a positive influence that will show them the possibilities in their lives. They need a place that will provide them with role models and resources for their personal life exploration. So - please join me in an exploration of the lives of a few women explorers:
