
Last year, when Electronic Arts unleashed Skate for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, it was a smashing success. With a revolutionary control system by the name of "Flick It", Skate gave the Tony Hawk franchise a run for its money. Using Flick It involved flicking the dual analog sticks on the Xbox or PS3 controller to achieve one-of-kind skate moves for a truly authentic skating experience. But with nary an analog stick, Nintendo received no love from Skate. Until now.
Enter Skate It, EA's recently announced sequel made exclusively for the Wii and DS. The game aims to use the unique controls from each to recreate the Flick It experience. On the Wii, you'll be able to flick your Wiimote to mirror skate moves, and on the DS you'll implement the stylus to cruise around. Both will take place in good 'ol San Vanelona, the original fictional locale from Skate. No word yet on the pro-skater characters, but we'll keep you posted on the new developments.
We had a chance to check out Skate It at EA's Holiday Preview, and there's a little something you should know about playing Skate It on the Wii. To mimic a true skating experience, wouldn't we need, say, a board? A...Balance Board perhaps?
That's right, you can use your Wii Balance Board like you would an actual skateboard to do tricks, flips, and all kinds of crazy stunts in Skate It. As you may already know from playing Wii Fit, the Balance Board is a super sensitive peripheral that responds to your weight shifting around as you stand on it. To use it with Skate It, you lean left or right to maneuver your way through the city, and eventually to pick up momentum to do tricks. You stand on it as you would a regular skateboard, and you'll be happy to know that it reacts like a regular board too. This doesn't mean you need to have Mike V worthy skills to shred in Skate It, but hey, it wouldn't hurt.
