Contrary to popular belief, summer is not all fun and games. Summer is according to the American Dietetic Association, one of the most dangerous seasons when it comes to food poisoning. In order to avoid the unpleasantries that go along with eating food gone badly, here are some tips for a safe summer diet.
1. Wash Your Veggies. Wash and dry vegetables before adding them to your salad, sandwich or appetizer. Always use separate cutting boards for veggies and meats and be sure to wash your hands between handling uncooked meats and produce.
2. The Sun is Not a Defroster. Do not count on the sun to defrost your meat while at your picnic. The warmth of the sun is enough for harmful bacteria to get inside your meat and multiply by the time the meat has thawed. Instead, defrost your meat in the refrigerator beforehand.
