"Okay." I felt good about helping. I felt as if he was doing all of the work and I felt bad about it, so doing my share of the work lessened the guilt.

I picked up the motel's phone and dialed Phoebe's number. No one picked up. So I dialed her cell. No answer. Then I called the coffee shop and Nana, who picked up, said Phoebe wasn't there. I didn't like this. I quickly logged onto my computer and checked to see if she was online. She wasn't so I looked at Alex worriedly.

"Do you think we can stop home so I can check on Phoebe, she never is totally inaccessible," I said, my voice quivering. Alex nodded understandingly.

We packed up and left a tip for the maids before walking out and into the office. There was a different person there today, and he looked at us critically. We told him we were checking out and he nodded before we left. We walked to a place out of view and wandered innocently into the woods, where we started to sprint. I was a tad slower than him today, so he waited.

The bus stop was waiting for us, this time with a big crowd of people, mostly kids. They all waved enthusiastically as we walked out of the woods. I was assuming it was a class field trip or something for a bunch of first graders. One of the adults looked at us suspiciously and approached.

"Excuse me, why were you in the woods? Shouldn't you two be in school?" Her voice was annoying. I looked at Alex, who smiled and put his arm around my waist.

"Trust me hon, you don't want to know why we were in the woods," he said, mouth barely opening to form the words. I raised my eyebrows and tried not to either laugh or smack him. He tried not to laugh as well.
