When Lollapalooza stopped touring and landed in Grant Park, it became even better than it was before. It went from having two stages to six different stages of performances. It has been in the same location since 2005 and will continue to be there until 2011.
Like many large concert tours, Lollapalooza offers sideline entertainment for the crowds milling around between stages and performances. Performance artists roam the concert grounds. Outrageous behavior and outrageous costumes are the standard.
In 2004, Lollapalooza staff also came up with the idea for Night Bloom, an after party series where concert goers and artists can mix and mingle to wind down the days activities. The Night Bloom parties feature cool-down areas as well as dance parties with DJ talent from all over the world.
There are a couple of bands that have been involved with Lollapalooza on more than one occasion. Rage Against The Machine who is headlining in this year's show also made an appearance in 1992 and 1993. The Violent Femmes, Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Death Cab for Cutie, Nine Inch Nails, Gnarls Barkley, Kanye West, and Blue October have all been involved on more than one occasion.
Booking a band and getting them to actually attend hasn't always been that easy. Several artists such as Green Day and Cypress Hill, skipped at least one Lollapalooza tour date in order to appear at Woodstock '94 instead. Nirvana was scheduled to headline but officially pulled out in April 1994 because of rumors that the band was on the verge of breaking up.
