Rock City Exclusive Interview

St. Thomas' brotherly duo comes out from behind the boards.

Having a day job as a songwriter for big name artists like Sean Kingston, Usher and Pussycat Dolls isn't such a terrible profession to have. But when you've got aspirations to break out as a solo act, well, that's when things can get a bit tricky. Rock City, a duo made up of brothers Timothy and Theron Thomas, first got put on as songwriters for Usher (who they admit made them a bit nervous), but once they became young veterans in the game, they knew that it was time for them to take matters into their own hands - and that meant doing it solo style.

Coming straight out of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Rock City is about to make their debut with Wake the Neighbors, a record that showcases the type of music that suits them rather than the artists for which they write. It doesn't have a release date as of now, but it's being put out on Akon's label Konlive Records, known for its ability to turn any record into a guaranteed hit. Their single "Losin It" is already out, and with a guest appearance from Busta Rhymes and tracks like "Up under the Covers" to be potentially included on the final cut, the duo is ready to step out and come into their own as their own musical act.

It's been a long journey from the pair of bros, though. Tired of the confines of living on St. Thomas, the two relocated to Miami and started performing in local talent shows, eventually heading on over to Atlanta to pursue their career. The pair met a then-unknown Akon while doing their solo thing, who remembered them after he blew up and started Konlive Records, signing them to a solo deal and giving them the opportunity to write a track for him. That snowballed into writing for others, and eventually allowing them to get enough experience on their resume to put their production career on hold and parlay that experience into Rock City.

While talking with Senior Editor Steven, Rock City discussed everything from how much they respect Jay-Z to why Norah Jones is the best soundtrack for long flights. Stating that they wish they could have written tracks like Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" and Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown's "No Air," Rock City let it be known that they're ready to take your radio by storm again. Only this time, you'll know that it's them singing on the front lines.
