No. 1 in the World: Jelena Jankovic

All About Serbia's Golden Girl

Written by: A. Niranjan – Posted: Mon Aug 11th, 2008
Jelena Jankovic is a name you may not have heard of before, but it's definitely worth taking note of. Jelena, also knows as Jeka in her home country, is the female athlete from Serbia who just claimed the No. 1 spot in women's tennis.

Though she has been talented on the courts since she first picked up a racket at nine-years-old, she is a rookie when it comes to the Olympics. Here is how she got her start.

She was born on February 28, 1985 in Serbia. Tennis was first something she was simply curious about and her older brother, Marko introduced her to the sport, no doubt unaware of quite where this racket and green ball would take her. The same as all who move to the U.S, Jelena did it for better opportunities, specifically in her tennis career. She moved to Florida and joined Nick Bolitieri's Academy to train.

By 2001 she won the Australian Open in Melbourne, making her No. 1 in the junior world. She was only 16 years old! In 2004 Jankovic ranked No.28 in the world. Not bad to jump 27 places in just 4 years.
