Back to School Laptops

Feature-packed notebooks that make the grade.

Fall is all about fresh starts: heading back to school or attending an entirely new one, making new friends, and taking on challenging new classes. It also makes for a great excuse to buy cool new stuff, and what better to stay on top of your schoolwork than getting one of the best laptops money can buy? Just tell your parents that having a laptop means you can do homework anywhere. They'll understand.

Acer Gemstone Blue

The Acer Blue might just be the coolest looking laptop on this list, but it's more than just a pretty (inter)face. Its widescreen and CineDash control panel are perfect for those who take their movies on the go. It also has an integrated webcam, Bluetooth, and Acer Arcade Deluxe software for all of your media files. There are two versions- the 8920G and the 6920G- so you can decide how much memory you'll need. Considering all of these features, the starting price of $900 isn't all that bad.

Toshiba Qosmio G55

The future of computing is here. This is the first laptop that uses gesture controls, meaning that it can interpret your hand motions from three to ten feet away, so you can control music and video without using a mouse, or even standing near it. When we tried it out a few months ago, we found the controls to be surprisingly easy to use, although you may feel a tad silly waving your hand around at first. This 18.4 inch widescreen is quite large, but with lightening quick video encoding, it's a pretty powerful machine. The Qosmio G55 is available now for $1,549.
