STARRING: Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Catherine O’Hara, Peter Dinklage, Simon Woods, Reese Witherspoon, and Richard E. Grant
Referred to as the "anti-Barbie" fairytale, Penelope stars Christina Ricci, a girl born to extremely wealthy socialite parents (O'Hara and Grant) whose family is plagued by an evil curse—one that only inflicts poor Penelope. With the curse literally deforming her, she is forced to remain hidden at home and keep her face, from the eyes down, covered at all times. Once her parents find out that true love is the only way for Penelope to be rid of the evil spell, they team up to gather a long list of suitors, each who are only intrigued by Penelope’s wealthy family. However, their dreams for the easy life fall short as they catch a glimpse of Penelope and her curse causing them to run for the hills instead of down the aisle. That is until the fateful day when a suitor named Max (McAvoy) shows up to their door. He is hired by a sleazy reporter (Dinklage) who only wants a photo of the mysterious curse. Once Max realizes he is falling for Penelope despite her appearance, he decides instead of coming clean or continuing to betray her, he will simply disappear. It is then and there that Penelope resolves she has had enough. She makes the decision to attempt to live a life of her own and from there the adventures and real magic begin.
