Here’s the one of the most popular ideas of how weight loss diets work: reduce the number of calories you eat to a point where they are below the number of calories you burn. Poof! Instant weight loss, right?
While most calorie-reduction diets work at least to some extent (though very few work over the long-term) they put too much focus on calories and not enough on your health.
Calories are a measurement of the energy in food. Energy that your body needs to function. You put on weight when you get too much energy (measured in calories) from your food. Your body is programmed to store that extra energy in case it’s needed later on. And it stores the energy as fat.
But because we are lucky enough in Canada to have an abundance of food, there is rarely a time when your body needs to use the extra energy it has stored in your fat cells. And it keeps adding more extra energy. And you become overweight.
But it’s risky to suddenly rob your body of daily calories. While your body knows it has stored energy, its natural defense mechanisms cause it to still seek out a minimum number of calories each day.
If you reduce your calorie intake below the level that you need each day, your body goes into stress. That triggers a reduction in your metabolic rate, which reduces the number of calories you need.
So now your body is playing a tug-of-war with your weight loss diet from weight loss centre. If you reduce your calorie intake too much, or burn too many calories through exercise, your body reduces its calorie requirements. So you need to cut more calories to continue to lose weight, and your body slows down even further.
It’s a very unhealthy situation.
It is essential for your body to get the nutrition it needs to help you lose weight successfully. You must make sure it always has proper nutrition so that it does not go into defense mode and start fighting your weight loss efforts.
To lose weight healthily, you must eat a balanced diet and maintain proper nutrition levels so that your body can help you, not work against you.
