Buy Tech on a Budget

The best times to buy your electronics
In our society today, you can never have too much technology, and with the way things are going, the latest and greatest is always just around the corner. But racking up gadgets is expensive and easily builds up debt, so when are the best times to buy tech gear and other electronics?

For most electronics, the best time to buy is in the winter months. Post holiday sales in January are a no-brainer, but there are also a surprising amount of deals taking place throughout the chilly season. Many have said that the best time to buy a computer is in late summer and early fall. A lot of manufacturers have back to school savings that can be used by everyone.

Experts agree that another good time to find deals is right after electronics trade shows and conventions take place (check Topline.tv for listings). The formula is simple: when new stuff comes in, old stuff goes on sale. For example the Consumer Electronics Show and Photo Marketing Association convention usually takes place between late January and early February. According to Yahoo! Finance, this results in major discounts on last year’s digital cameras.

As for large screen and high definition TVs, the best prices are usually found after Super Bowl Sunday. After all, most people aren’t going to go out of their way to get a big screen after the big game.

For game systems, the best time to buy is now. The seasonal price slashes are taking place now, but other factors play in as well. With the Sony PlayStation 3 out, the Sony PlayStation 2 is getting cheaper by the day. Also, as demand continues to decrease for the Nintendo Wii, prices will continue to slowly drop.

Never overlook the "old" stuff! What is considered out of date by sellers could be just right for you and your wallet. iPods, for example, are constantly being updated. I personally bought one of the original iPod Nanos right after the next model hit shelves. The result? I paid almost half the price a friend of mine did when he bought the same model months earlier. As the old saying goes: timing is everything.
