Healthy Date Desserts

Best and worst desserts

When having dinner with your date, dessert can be an extremely important part of the meal. But if you're watching your weight, or just trying to eat healthy, follow this guide to some of the least healthiest desserts and a healthier alternative for each.

If you want to bake a cake for your date, boxed mixes are an easy and inexpensive colution. Anything with the word "deluxe" on it should probably be avoided, since deluxe tends to mean more of something, like calories. Go with a mix that contains reduced sugar or calories. Pillsbury has a cake mix out with 50% less sugar, which is much better than most cake mixes. Not to mention, Pillsbury is a common household name when it comes to desserts.

I don't know anyone who doesn't love ice cream, so if you want to stick with a simple classic to end your date on a good note, it's as easy as going to your local supermarket. However, there are still some brands you should watch out for. Häagen-Dazs Chocolate Peanut Butter — sounds yummy, right? Unfortunately, just a half cup of this stuff has 360 calories. Go with Breyers All Natural Vanilla and Chocolate instead. With just 130 calories, you can still enjoy a great tasting treat without the guilt of over-indulging.

If you want to go out for a sweet treat, Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops are a popular destination. Although it may be hard to remember to watch your calories with a huge variety of ice cream in front of you, it is possible. A half cup of chocolate fudge brownie original ice cream will land you at 250 calories. A simple scoop of strawberry or vanilla ice cream is a better option, but if your sweet tooth is screaming for chocolate, try a half cup of chocolate fudge brownie frozen yogurt. It only has 170 calories. Another thing to remember at an ice cream shop is to avoid anything with "chunks" in it, like cookie dough or peanut butter cups.

Regardless of what dessert you choose, or where you get it, always remember to check the calories. If you're trying to lose weight, some say a healthy amount of calories is between 1200 and 1400 for women, and about 1800 for men. If you're really trying to eat healthy, it might be a good idea to write down everything you eat each day, and tally up the calories for each item. This will give you an idea of where you're at now, and help you cut your calories down to where you need to be.
