Relationships in The Sims 3

Finding love in a computerized world

Let’s talk about love. You’re talking to that special someone and you just can’t help flirting repeatedly. Finally, you click “confess attraction” and voila! Your plum-bob is a healthy green and before you know it, you’ll be able to click “propose marriage” but—wait; you did know I was talking about love in The Sims 3, right?

Relationships are definitely one of the most interesting aspects of The Sims 3, which came out earlier this past summer. While die-hard fans of The Sims 2 may be a little disappointed by limited items and lack of towns, relationships are one of the features that have mainly improved with age.

Because the game focuses so much on individual personalities, interactions between sims are now more complex and thus more interesting. Each sim is equipped with five traits out of a list of 63 very detailed and often humorous traits. Therefore it is often best to pair up sims with similar personalities to form friendships and even romances.

Because of this however, it can be a little difficult to make sims fall in love. You have to have two sims get to know each other first in order to find out if they have similar traits. You do not want to bother attempting to make two sims with opposing personalities fall head over heels. For example, a sim with “commitment issue” is not going to do so well with a sim who is a “hopeless romanitic”. It isn’t impossible to make them love each other, but it sure isn’t easy.

You can also see what sims think of each other. For example, “Gavin thinks Brandy is being alluring” or “Marisa thinks Nick is being awkward” are very useful in helping you find friends and significant others for your sims. It’s easy to see when sims just aren’t going to get along.

Sims with chemistry are going to show it in their interaction options. The faster more flirting and romance interactions appear in their options, the more likely they are to fall in love. Sometimes it is best to start with an existing friendship and build romance from there. Just have one sim start flirting with the other.

Keep in mind that if relationships don’t work out, there are plenty of other sims out there. After all, you can always just go to “create a sim” and create that special someone yourself.
