Ask Rebel MelGot a question you need answered? Sometimes it's easier to ask someone that question anonymously. Sometimes you would rather have the opinion of someone with an outside point of view. Whatever your reasoning may be, the Kiwibox team is here to help. Inspired by the popular advice columns "Dear Abby" and "Dear Ann Landers", we have decided to launch an advice column of our own! Starting right now, anyone with a question to ask is urged to email me at ask.rebel.mel@gmail.com (ask DOT rebel DOT mel AT gmail DOT com) and if you would like to remain anonymous, just let us know!If we get enough responses, this could become a weekly article, so please don't be shy! Your first question to me may be "Who are you and what makes you so great at giving advice?" Well that's a great question. Firstly, my name is Mel and I am a 20-something avid blogger in the wonderful city of Boston. There have been a lot of times in my life where I needed advice and I was very glad to get it! I want to be here for all of you too, so I will answer any question you happen to have, whether it be about relationships, friends, family, or even something totally embarrassing that you've been too shy to ask before. The sky is the limit! I am really thrilled to have the chance to be a part of this and I hope all of you feel the same way! I look forward to reading and answering your questions! Until next time... more... River City Extension Interview!Jersey natives River City Extension have proven themselves to be talented and passionate and Kiwibox.com is not the only one who has noticed. The octet is signed to XOXO Records, the label that made a certain other NJ band Gaslight Anthem known. Their debut full-length album The Unmistakable Man is due out in May and they are currently planning a US Tour this summer. With so much going on, lead vocalist, guitarist and pianist Joe Michelini took some time during their March 5th show at the Bowery Electric to talk to the K-box about Paul Simon, being locked in a dungeon and MTV's The Jersey Shore. What should listeners expect from your debut full album The Unmistakable Man out in May?I hope they expect to be pulled, for their hearts to be tugged on. I want to make music that's interesting, and moves the listener. Music that really affects you, that's always been my mission. I think, in general, that's the mission of art.. to evoke emotion, is it not? What are the negative and positive aspects of being an 8 piece band?I positively love it and our bank account is negative, in short. We are a family, we had Thanksgiving dinner together, we hang out just because, we make each other dinner, buy each other tea with the money we don't have, give each other the emotional and mental support we need.. the only downside is travel. Traveling with this many people gets expensive. I'd take this over a small band for sure though. What artists influence you the most?I think one of my biggest influences of all time is Frightened Rabbit. They are simply incredible. They're the one I forget to mention in most of our interviews, but they must be my biggest inspiration. Them, Paul Simon, Why?, Margot & The Nuclear So and So's, Modest Mouse, they all influence my writing/performance a lot.If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?Probably Paul Simon. No definitely Paul Simon.. or maybe the folks from Anathallo, that'd be interesting as well.If you were locked in a dungeon for 20 years without any music, what would be the first song you listened to when you got out? I want to say I'd probably just throw on the closest radio, but I don't know; 20 years without music is a long time. Strange shit happens to people in situations like that, I don't know for some reason all I can think about is The Count of Monte Cristo. That dude had a crazy experience in a dungeon. I'm really not sure. I might kill myself first. Not in a dark way, with like, a rock or something. Real classy.Since you’re from Toms River (technically the “Jersey Shore”), what do you think of the infamous show on MTV?I love it. Hands down, best show, and I don't even watch TV. Everyone stop whining. No, that's not the whole Jersey Shore, but it is a part of it, and is certainly a part of Seaside Heights. It's awesome. I wish them the best of luck. more... "Alice in Wonderland" FashionWith such imagery shown in posters and trailers for Alice in Wonderland, it’s not hard to wonder why many designers are jumping on board with the craze. The highly anticipated movie, directed by Tim Burton, was a box office hit on its opening weekend grossing $116.3 million in the U.S and $210.3 million internationally. Merchandise was already being sold pre-opening for what was predicted as a box office smash hit. Urban Outfitters had a section on their website dedicated to Alice in Wonderland merchandise and accessory designer Tarina Tarantino has a collection of Alice inspired vintage jewelry collection. Many other designers are using Alice as a muse in their collections. Designers, such as Zac Posen, are designing for the everyday Alice. In Zac Posen’s pre-fall 2010 collection, he uses checkered patterns, tuxedos, and pocket watches to showcase his inspiration. Even Donatella Versace got her inspiration for her 2010 Spring Collection from Alice. According to Style.com, Versace was telling everyone backstage at her Spring Collection Show at Milan’s Fashion Week that she got her inspiration from Alice in Wonderland; she stated, "I loved the idea of that fantasyland." Her spring collection features whimsical patterns, geometric prints and vivid pastel colors. Of course, not all of us could be the everyday Alice in designer clothes. For those of us looking to be Alice in the more realistic sense, just stick to the pastels, floral prints, and checkered and striped patterns. more... Exclusive Interview with Kate Nash!British singer/ songwriter Kate Nash is known for her quirky feisty lyrics, her fun fashion sense and oh yeah, her platinum selling UK number one album Made of Bricks. This spring, she is gracing the world with her second full album entitled My Best Friend Is You. The incredibly charming Kate sat down with Kiwibox.com to tell us about her new album, how she started out working at a fast food restaurant and why she thinks Karen O rocks! What should fans expect from your upcoming album this spring? I think it’s a progression from the last album. I’ve grown up a lot. I’ve lived longer. I’m hopefully older and wiser. I’ve had a lot more experiences and I’ve been able to take a step back from everything that’s happened to me and try to understand it and also try to forget about it and live a normal life again. It’s still very much me and recognizable as me but it’s definitely different than what I’ve done before and I think that’s the way it should be. How is different from Made of Bricks? There is a lot of influence from 60s girl groups and punk bands. The two somehow met in the middle and it sounds quite raw and some sound quite pop and some experimental. It was fun to do.How did you first realize you wanted to be in the music industry?I always wrote music and I played the piano as a kid. Then, I wanted to be an actor for a while and I was doing theater but I didn’t get into the university or drama school. I was really bored because I was working in a fast food restaurant. So I started writing songs again because there was nothing to do. Then, I did my first little gig and I was so nervous. After the gig, they paid me 30 quid and soon as they put it in my hand, I was like, ‘hold on a minute, no one told me I could do this as a job!’ I literally quit my job the next day. I was so happy I could do something fun for a living and creative.Where do you gain inspiration for your honest lyrics?Life, really… experiences with friendships, relationships. I’m a bit of a people watcher so other people’s lives and other people’s stories and scandals…film, theater and books and music as well. What/who are your biggest influences?Kathleen Hanna. I love Karen O as well. I think she’s absolutely beautiful and she’s doing her own thing. I always like British punk bands like the Buzzcocks and oh yeah, X-Ray Spex! I’m obsessed with her, she’s so cool. I love her lyrics. What is your favorite song to perform live? It’s going to change now with the new album but I’m really going to enjoy playing "Don't You Want To Share The Guilt" and "I Just Love You More".Who are the three most played artists on your iPod?The Cribs, Brett Alaimo and Peggy Sue. more...
