Census Won't Count Gay Marriages In 2010

Same-sex marriage is legal in two states, but not a single one will show up in the 2010 census. The Census Bureau says the federal Defense of Marriage Act bars the agency from recognizing gay marriages in the nation's 10-year count, even though the marriages are legal in Massachusetts and California. The agency's director, Steven Murdock, said in an interview Thursday that the 1996 federal law "has that effect, in terms of being a federal agency. We are restricted by it." The Census Bureau does not ask people about their sexual orientation, but it does ask about their relationships to the head of the household. Many gay couples are listed in census figures as unmarried, same-sex partners, though it is an imperfect tally of all gay couples. Murdock said the bureau will strive to count same-sex couples in the 2010 census, just as it has in the past. But those people who say they are married will be reclassified as unmarried, same-sex partners.

Respond: Do you think same-sex married couples should be counted as married in the census?

It sucks to realize that you will not be recognized in the ways straight people are recognized. Yes, we should be counted. But we won't be probably for a long time because that's the way of the red, the white, and the blue. :/

Yes, that's true, it MUST be recognized by the state. Hmmm, both Pres. candidates are AGAINST gay marriage, I doubt it would come up when the census is conducted on his watch. I think it SHOULD be, but it won't be, so ehh...bigger fish to fry.

I thought if one state recognized a marriage the rest were supposed to too? I think they should give 2 separate stats just to show the thoughts of the time.

It's not a FEDERAL acknowledgement. So I understand why it won't be part of the Census. One day, I believe, marriage will be between ANY sex, and it will be counted. The litte step in two states is a start. I'm good with that.

As long as the people within the relationship are counted as individuals in the census, I think it's ok. As of right now, same sex marriage is not accepted by the majority of the states, so therefore there's no major need or reason to include it in the census. I would be willing to be that this will change when they do the next census though.

Yes The census should display an accurate account of what is going on.
