Smokers buying cigarettes [in Britain] will from Wednesday be confronted with a series of gruesome images printed on the packets showing how tobacco damages health.

The pictures, which show cancerous lungs and throats as well as rotting teeth, replace written warnings such as "Smoking clogs the arteries and causes heart attacks and strokes" or "Smoking can cause a slow and painful death" which currently greet going to light up.

The picture warnings will start appearing on cigarette packs from October 1 and will be compulsory from October next year. They will be printed on all tobacco products from October 2010.

One in six people in Britain smoke out of population of more than 60 million and the government has been stepping up measures to reduce that figure.

Written warnings on packs were adopted in 2003, and last year, the minimum age for buying tobacco was raised from 16 to 18.

Respond: Do you think this will help people to stop smoking?

Wow. Those are very graphic. D: I think it might help people a bit. They may quite just because they don't want to see those nasty pictures. haha. I know it wouldn't motivate me to quit though.

My neighbor smokes and when she smokes on her balcony I can smell it in my apartment so I need to close my door. I don't even see how it can be limited to just private space for that reason. I don't know if the pictures will help. I think limiting the areas people can smoke helps more. Then again, I've never smoked because of all the disgusting pictures I saw in elementary school and middle school.

I agree with you about how companies are making it look cool, but I think that alot of the time when people see the extreme ads, they "think" they are too hooked to smoking to stop. I smoked before I got pregnant with my daugter for yearsss and I quit as soon as I found out. I know that its possible. Ive also seen my grandmother die from the side effects and lived with my guardian who is on his way there. I dont like it around me but like I said before, those that are educated, even those that arent but still choose to smoke, should be able to do so without all the nasty pictures and such. I mean, they dont do it for alcohol and look at all the health problems that causes, of course others cant be affected health wise with your drinking but still...They have warnings but no graphic pictures.

hisfuturewife is right on the point that its their choice, and that if they want choose it should not be in ANY area where residual smoke is being inhaled by a person that is not choosing to smoke (such as a mothers care while driving, a restaurant, airport, etc. and regarding not making them feel guilty, i think the main purpose of these images is not to hurt anyones feelings, it is a law passed to try and combat the billions and billions of dollars the tobacco companies pump into making smoking seem normal/fun/hip/cool. and i think a lot of people truly dont understand the damage smoking does to their body, because it is not outwardly visible for decades (see photo above). my two cents.

I think people really need to leave those that smoke alone. Keep it out of public areas, yes, that way that people that dont want to be around it dont have too but its a personal choice and people shouldnt be made to feel guilty while smoking.

I like reading the labels in other countries, they're a lot more graphic and creative than the ones in the USA. I think people probably just ignore ours, because it's the same thing all the time, it doesn't have much of an effect, I don't think. Pictures should definitely have an effect on some people! I imagine some people would have a hard time justifying their habit if they have those images to look at. I agree with mike though. There will still be those people out there who think the warnings only depict very rare cases, and that nothing will happen to them. I don't think the images will go unnoticed though!

They do the same thing in Canada I think, maybe a little less graphic. I don't know if it will work but at least it will open peoples eyes a little bit more.

That is aggressive, and i like it. I think it will totally start waking some people up. Obviously some people dont care about their bodies (or my right to a smoke free airport terminal), and they will continue to smoke.
