Blackout Brings Good Luck for White Sox
In some circles, twirling white towels against a background of black might constitute surrender. That certainly was not the intent of the Chicago White Sox' marketing department, which again asked fans to wear black for Game 3 of the American League division series on Sunday, when Chicago tried to avoid a three-game sweep by the Tampa Bay Rays.

A so-called blackout at U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday, interrupted only by florescent yellow-green jackets of the vendors, brought good luck in John Danks's previous start, when he beat the Minnesota Twins in a tie-breaker game for the A.L. Central title. The left-handed Danks pitched well enough again over six and two-thirds innings Sunday, when the White Sox abandoned their usual offensive approach and won, 5-3, to force a Game 4 in the best-of-five series.
Tampa Bay still leads, two games to one, and the White Sox need to win Monday to send the series back to St. Petersburg, Fla., for a deciding Game 5. The Rays are trying to reach the A.L. Championship Series in their first appearance in the postseason.
