Golden Gate Bridge directors voted overwhelmingly late this morning to hang nets alongside the landmark bridge to prevent suicides. Directors voted 14-to-1 for the nets with the lone "no" vote from Director James Eddie of Mendocino, who said that people in his county did not support a barrier. The decision was greeted with applause from an audience of about 50 people, including psychiatrists, suicide prevention experts and family members of people who had jumped to their deaths from the bridge. "This is a red-letter day," said Dr. Mel Blaustein, director of psychiatry at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco. "There's been a real change in attitude on this board, and I'm thrilled. It's just marvelous." The net, which is expected to cost $40 million to $50 million, was the least costly of five proposed suicide barriers, which included 10-to-12-foot vertical or horizontal barriers that would sit atop the existing 4-foot railings.

i think this is a waste of money. we're already being taxed ridiclous prices for wasting money--why are we wasting more money that won't even do anything but make a couple of people feel better about their suicidal friends?? okay, maybe it'll stop a few suicides, but if it's not the bridge, it's pills, or hanging, or a gunshot to the head, or whatever.

Then responsibility falls on whom, BMW? It's not just one family affected by the suicides and no one can legally put a net there. Things cost money. That's just the way the world works. That shouldn't stop people from trying to do the right thing.

a waste of money, not the city or county or states responsibility to handle this.

I think the point is that they won't be doing it there. It's such a famous place to commit suicide so taking it away will be helpful, I think. It's a good thing.

I don't feel that this will prevent suicide. People will just find another way if they really want to do it.
