Shawn Turschak of Chapel Hill was tired of someone stealing McCain-Palin campaign signs from his yard. Turschak, with a degree in electrical engineering, hooked up a third sign to a power source for an electric pet fence Monday and also put up a surveillance camera. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that a 9-year-old boy with an Obama-Biden sign grabbed the McCain-Palin sign and got a jolt on Tuesday. The boy's father, Andrew Noble, upset that his son had been shocked, showed up at Turschak's door. Soon an Orange County sheriff's deputy also showed up at the Turschak's home. Noble said his son just wanted to see how the sign was put together. Turschak said the boy intended to swap out the signs. Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass said he doesn't plan to file charges.

"that's where being a parent comes in..." yeah bc when you're out on a walk in your neighborhood with your kids you should ALWAYS be on the lookout for unmarked electric shock signs.....riiiiiiiiiight. I'll keep that in mind next time.

I really don't see much wrong with it, as no one has any right to come onto his property and mess with his sign. Sometimes, when you mess with other people's things, you get in trouble. A jolt from a dog fence really isn't that bad (my uncle raises huskies and I had the unfortunate experience of discovering the electric fence before I was told) - it would just be enough to make him think 'woah, hands off!' Still - these parents need to grow up and respect their differences.

I think that it's inhumane to hook any sign up to a power source knowing that there are people committing these senseless crimes.

unfortunately parents on both sides of the campaign are employing their children to steal signs. stealing signs is stupid.

"what if some random toddler had wandered into his yard and began playing with it?" But that's where being a PARENT comes in!

It's private property, what he does is on his own free will. Instead of trying to push all the blame on the man, they should wonder where the parents were for the kid to be roaming around the neighborhood stealing signs. It's not like the sign was going to get up, walk over, and touch people, the child walked over and touched it. Putting the blame on people when it's not their fault is becoming a standard for this country. Stop blaming others and blame the parents for failing at parenting.

I highly doubt that he just wanted to see how it was put together...if he had his own Obama sign as the article states...he could have just looked at how that sign was put together, since they are constructed in the same manner. The real question here is,isn't it illegal,somehow...someway for this man to have this electric shock sign with no warnings of it? I mean what if some random toddler had wandered into his yard and began playing with it?
