Doctors Say Marrow Transplant May Have Cured AIDS

An American man who suffered from AIDS appears to have been cured of the disease 20 months after receiving a targeted bone marrow transplant normally used to fight leukemia, his doctors said Wednesday.

While researchers -- and the doctors themselves -- caution that the case might be no more than a fluke, others say it may inspire a greater interest in gene therapy to fight the disease that claims 2 million lives each year. The virus has infected 33 million people worldwide.

Dr. Gero Huetter said his 42-year-old patient, an American living in Berlin who was not identified, had been infected with the AIDS virus for more than a decade. But 20 months after undergoing a transplant of genetically selected bone marrow, he no longer shows signs of carrying the virus.

Actually InkForBlood I've studied HIV/AIDS in the past as a peer counselor and, AIDS has been known to go "into remission" from time to time. With the proper balance of antivirals and other assorted drugs you can get your T-cell count to come to "normal" levels and have your virus count go to zero as well. It takes a lot of trial and error and it doesn't always last that long, but there have been cases where this has happened. Hopefully this new theoretical treatment can be used to discover the proper gene therapy to at least extend patient's lives just that much longer, and maybe get them into remission as well (maybe cure, but cure is such a strong word when talking about a chronic illness).

if you read the whole article, the marrow transplant might not sound very cool anymore. patient has to go through very dangerous treatment and the chance of finding someone who is immune to the virus is very low....

How can it be a fluke? AIDS doesn't spontaneously go into remission like cancer sometimes does. This is very exciting news though. And it really does make sense, I'm surprised they've never tried this before.

that is crazy. you'd think someone would have tried this before now. i hope this leads to more research though and that it is not just a fluke
