Ontario's Liberal government has introduced legislation which will make it illegal for drivers under 21 to have any alcohol in their system when they're behind the wheel.

The change will also apply to every new driver during their first year on the road, no matter what the driver's age.

Another section of the bill will limit the number of teens allowed to be in a vehicle at one time.

The new rules are intended make the roads safer and come in response to two deadly crashes involving young drivers in the past couple of years.

Respond: What do you think of these new rules?

I think they're heading in the right direction.

I agree and disagree with this. I live in Ontario, by the way. I think it's a good idea because most people by the time they are 21 are more responsible drivers and the initial "thrill" of drinking has worn off. On the other hand, I don't think it's fair to allow people to drink at 18 and then say you can't have any alcohol in your system while driving until you're 21. Maybe they should raise the legal age? I'm wondering with the passenger limit....what is going to happen at parties? If they're all 19 and under, then half the people there would have to be designated drivers because they'd only be allowed one passenger. And we all know that won't ever happen. So I think they need to work something out better with that....I get the point of the rule, but it's not going to stop these teenagers from drinking and driving. They'll take the risk just so they can have some booze rather then be stuck being the designated driver.

in bc, our graduated licensing system is similar. we are allowed unlimited immediate family passengers (in regards to the number of seatbelts) but only one other passenger, unless a licensed person over 25 is in the vehicle. the bac must be zero, although for those with 'regular' licenses, 1-2 drinks is legal. unfortunately, the passenger limit really hinders carpooling.

Another part of the new rules is that any young driver caught speeding gets an automatic license suspension for 30 days. Although the intentions of these rules are good, some are a bit extreme. I definitely agree with zero tolerance for BAC. But like, the limit of only one passenger under 21 is a bit of an issue in the example of people who carpool to go to university. There are a lot of kinks that need to ironed out before it's implemented in January.

I wish the US would do something like that with their driving laws, but maybe since they're starting to crack down on people driving while talking on their cell phones maybe this will be the next thing. Two kids just got into an accident around my old house and they were going 150 mph becuase they had boosters on the car, needless to say, they both died, and it took police a while to find all their body parts.

We already have this law in Washington state, I thought everyone had it.

Although I am in USA I prever the Conservative party of Canada over the Liberal party but I have to agree with the Liberals on this one.
