The holiday shopping season got off to a surprisingly solid start, according to data released Saturday by a research firm. But the sales boost during the post-Thanksgiving shopathon came at the expense of profits as the nation's retailers had to slash prices to attract the crowds in a season that is expected to be the weakest in decades. Sales during the day after Thanksgiving rose 3 percent to $10.6 billion, according to preliminary figures released Saturday by ShopperTrak RCT Corp., a Chicago-based research firm that tracks sales at more than 50,000 retail outlets. Last year, shoppers spent about $10.3 billion on the day after Thanksgiving, dubbed Black Friday because it was historically the sales-packed day when retailers would become profitable for the year. But this year, many observers were expecting consumers to spend more time browsing than buying, amid contractions in consumer spending and growing fears about economic uncertainty and trouble in the global financial markets.

Respond: Did you shop on Black Friday?

i did...but i am probably never going to do that again...people are insane and so greedy when it comes to saving a few dollars on things they or their kids dont need...not only could i not get around in any store at the mall or find parking, people were pushing and grabbing and someone could have end up hurt...people dont realize how rude they can be sometimes...i feel bad for the guy who was killed at walmart that day because people couldnt get over their greed and selfishness to walk thru the store instead of run...they need to cut this black friday crap out...its not necessary...stop giving the sales for only a few hours...give them all the time so that everyone has a fair chance to take advantage of them...not just a few crazy people who get no sleep to get up early to get only one or two dollars off an item they still would have bought if there was not a sale

I do NOT shop Black Friday because I am not an idiot who gets up at insane hours or sits outside stores from Wednesday til whenever the store opens on Friday morning to save a few dollars or buy some cheap junk I don't really need....I do however have to work Black Friday since I work @ a department store, and I did NOT see people shopping like they used to in my store @ all.
