Military History

History of humanity is often considered to be the history of wars and war conflicts between states and nations. Although history includes many other historical events, warfare is a landmark of any historical periods. For this reason, understanding military history is important for any professional military officer. However, not only military officers, but also all people must have a historical memory because history is supposed to teach people about mistakes and successes of their predecessors. One cannot understand the present time without knowing the past, and, undoubtedly, military history is vital for military officers.

Modern educational programs often lack military history education at colleges, which leads to ignorance of students about history of military conflicts. Actually, it is important to understand the nature of warfare as it allows one to conceive many other aspects of a historical period. Thus, the lack of military history education at colleges results in a common ignorance of students about history. The significant role of history in the common learning and understanding other subjects is clear. However, students’ knowledge cannot be complete because of the lack of military education at colleges. Personally for me, as for the future military officer, military history is the most relevant field in historical science. Understanding the causes and effects of wars allows me to comprehend other historical events, which are also related to nowadays. For my career, it would mean that I always have to develop and maintain my knowledge about military history.

At the same time, it is important to understand the evolution of military doctrines as soon as it always influences domestic and foreign policy of any state. Starting with the military doctrine of Ancient Athens and Sparta, and ending with militarist Japan and the Soviet Union, one can understand the modern military doctrines of the United States, Russian Federation and other countries who are the active members of the international alliances, such as NATO. Doctrinal evolution is especially evident in the twentieth century, when two world wars took place. Thus, it is of paramount importance to see the development of military doctrines for anyone who is going to be a military officer. A military doctrine explains the way a country will conduct its defensive or offensive operations, what corps would be mainly involved into warfare, and so on. That is why doctrinal evolution also reflects the technological and industrial progress of a state.

As it was stated above, everyone should have a strong historical memory in order to avoid mistakes of his\her predecessors. However, modern politicians often show their complete illiteracy of military history. Probably, they suppose that it is not important for them to know the past military conflicts, but actually, it would allow them to know how it is better to deal before or during an armed conflict. Politicians who are able to decide the destiny of nations and states have to be aware of how their predecessors acted in similar situations and whether they failed or succeeded. Nevertheless, many modern politicians seem to be not aware and interested in military history, and history as a whole. War always leaves its mark on the further history of a state; therefore, it is significant to act properly in such cases. Politicians are those who can be the main actors in waging a military conflict, but their ignorance about the past conflicts causes their unawareness of how to avoid war. It makes them less flexible in international relations with other countries that can be the reason of modern tension between West and East.
