How to Treat TMJ With the Right Diet

TMJ, also known as Temporamandibular Joint Disorder, is an unpleasant chronic condition that causes pain and discomfort in the jaw, which is often worse while eating, talking, laughing or otherwise using your mouth. While there are some TMJ relief options, generally it's something that is persistent and highly disruptive.

As you can imagine, one of the most upsetting aspects of suffering with TMJ is that it can take the joy out of eating. Jaws are also prone to clicking and moving awkwardly during eating and all this means you can end up actually dreading meals. This is not only a terrible shame but also actually a problem as it can lead to weight loss and even malnutrition. What's more, there are actually a number of different foods and things that can potentially contribute to treatment for TMJ depending on the precise nature and cause of the condition.

If you suffer from TMJ or know someone who does, then read on and we will look at some things that can make eating easier when you have TMJ and at which types of foods can help with your TMJ treatment plan.

Edible Foods

If you find that TMJ is causing discomfort that makes eating difficult, then you need to look for foods that will be softer and easier to eat.

This means avoiding very crunchy food or anything that requires a lot of chewing. While you might enjoy steak, something like a pie or a stew can provide an easier way to get your meat without having to chew constantly. When eating out it can offer be safer to choose things off the menu that don't involve bread or meat. Pasta is often safer, as is soup or salad.

When eating at home, you will often find that a blender is a very useful tool. Blending any meal can make a delicious soup that you can enjoy to get all the same goodness with none of the painful effort. Alternatively, just make sure to spend a little longer cutting up your food so you can enjoy it more. If you cut up your meal beforehand then it doesn't have to take any longer while you actually eat so you won't find yourself going off your food before you even manage to finish.

Finally, make sure you use whichever type of TMJ pain relief you are relying on just before meals to help get you through them without too much pain and discomfort.

Good Foods

There are a number of foods that can help contribute to long-term TMJ treatment as well as easing the condition in the short term and any of these are useful additions to your diet.

One example is food that serves as a muscle relaxant. Foods like valerian root for instance and ginger can actually help to relax the muscles and this is very useful for providing TMJ relief particularly if the problem is muscular in nature.

Some of the best muscle relaxants are foods containing magnesium like almonds and sea vegetables such as seaweed. These are particularly powerful because they're also great sources of calcium, which are great for the bones and joints and thus aid with TMJ treatment.

Meanwhile other foods can also fight inflammation such as fatty fish and whole grains. These too are effective for short and long term TMJ relief.

Many people will find it much easier to get these benefits from supplements. One of the most effective supplements for TMJ treatment is 'The TMJ Pill' which contains a number of ingredients that together combat pain, reduce inflammation, relax the muscles and support tissue repair. Many people find that The TMJ Pill can both provide short term TMJ pain relief and long term recovery.
