What You Should Know About How a Split Air Conditioner Functions

You'll be well aware of how much you need it each year when the sun hits your house and the heat begins to build up in your home. Air conditioning has become a modern necessity. The units help to regulate two main issues from summer, high humidity and high temperature.

One popular system is known as a split air conditioner. These air conditioners have two different parts that help it get its name. It has both an indoor component and an outdoor component. The outdoor component is made up of the condenser coils and the compressor. The indoor components are the evaporator coils and the blower unit.


A split air conditioner works in the following manner:

1. The compressor pressurizes refrigerant. This makes the gas's heat rise.

2. This high pressure gas then works its way through many tubes and eventually turns into a liquid.

3. The liquid stays at a high pressure, while working its way through the coils of the condenser until it hits the expansion joint.

4. As the liquid makes its way through the joints, it lowers in pressure and turns into a gas.

5. As this pressure lowers, the gas lowers in temperature and becomes a great deal cooler.

6. The gas later returns to the compressor, and begins to repeat the entire process, as the air that is being taken from the room passes back over the coils of the evaporator which cools it.

7. The blower forces this cooler air back into the room to lower the temperature.

8. This air continues to go around through the air conditioning unit until the air in the room hits the temperature set on the thermostat.


Once this temperature is hit, the air conditioner will turn off.

While this process works very much the same as it does with other types of air conditioners, the difference is that one part of the unit is outside the house, while another part is inside.

In this type of air conditioner, the compressor, vent fan, and condenser coils are all placed outside of the house. They are connected to the outside parts of the unit by pipes and various lengths of tubing.

Central air conditioning units are often considered split air conditioners. Many people see split units as a different type of unit, with a small compressor box outside and individual units inside each house.

However, split air conditioners are designed to cool the rooms in your home, even without ducts. This system is far simpler, and allows you much better control of the zones.

What makes these types of air conditioners work well?

•    Compared to window air conditioners, this type of unit has a large compressor that can cool a bigger area.

•    You can hook a single compressor up to ductless units or to different sets of ducting.

•    Maintenance is also easy

How are split air conditioning systems different?

1. There's also no real difference, as central air conditioners are a type of split system that doesn't really require ducts.

2. Compared to either window or portable air conditioners, however, split systems can cool far bigger areas.

3. Split air conditioners have a much bigger overall processing capacity, due to their much bigger compressors.

4. The split systems two main parts are also separated into two very distinct areas, which means they can be serviced at different times.

The biggest difference is that these are all in the unit that is outside the home. The part inside has the filter, blower, evaporator coils, as well as the individual unit boxes.
