How to Take Ciprofloxacin to Prevent Anthrax

6683206977914426248.jpg

Anthrax is a rare but serious medical condition which can be fatal. It’s usually caused by Bacillus anthracis, a bacterium that forms spores. A person can contract it by coming into contact with anthrax germs.

Symptoms of Anthrax

This condition normally manifests itself under four different forms. This means that the symptoms vary depending on the form of anthrax infection.

•Cutaneous Anthrax normally enters the human body via sores or cuts on the skin. It displays symptoms such as an itchy bump with a black center. Besides that, a patient may end up with swelled lymph glands. •Pulmonary Anthrax develops after you breathe air that contains the anthrax germs. The patient may display flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, muscle aches, mild fever, and sore throat.

•Gastrointestinal Anthrax is an infection that’s caused after ingesting undercooked meat from animals that had anthrax. Symptoms include fever, headaches, vomiting, nausea, and loss of appetite.

•Injection Anthrax is usually contracted by injecting yourself with illegal drugs. Although it’s very rare, several cases have been reported in the past few years. Symptoms of Injection Anthrax include significant swelling and redness in the injection area.

Ciprofloxacin and Anthrax

Cipro is one of the antibiotics that’s used to treat Anthrax. The FDA approved prescription drug is a powerful antibiotic that is effective in treating bacterial diseases such as anthrax.

How Ciprofloxacin should be taken

Adults and children who weigh 31 kilograms or more should take one pill in the morning and another pill in the evening. Each pill should be taken with a full glass of water, with or without food. Children who weigh less than 31 kilograms will have a customized dose depending on their weight.

Note: ciprofloxacin should be taken as per the doctor’s instructions to avoid unwanted side effects.

Who Shouldn’t Take Ciprofloxacin?

As much as this antibiotic is effective in treating Anthrax infections, it’s not advisable to take it if you are allergic to medications that belong to the quinolones group. An allergic person may end with a severe reaction that includes swollen lips, face, or tongue. Besides that, some people may end up experiencing trouble breathing. If you have had myasthenia gravis in the past, then you should also avoid taking this drug.

Caution

This antibiotic should not be taken if you are taking a drug such as Zanaflex. Additionally, you need to speak to your doctor if you are taking drugs for diseases such as schizophrenia, diabetes, and asthma. Do not skip any dose and in case you miss a dose by mistake, simply wait until the next scheduled time. Avoid taking two doses at once. Ciprofloxacin should not be crushed or split. Swallow it with water only and not yogurt, milk, or juice.

Possible Side Effects of Ciprofloxacin

The side effects of ciprofloxacin are usually mild and they include sunburns, vomiting, and vaginal yeast infection. However, some people may end up experiencing serious side effects such as:

•Breathing problems

•Dizziness, seizures, or tremors

•Skin rash including wheals and hives

•Serious stomach cramps and diarrhea

•Dark brown urine

In case you end up with serious side effects, seek professional help as soon as you can. Even though ciprofloxacin antibiotic can result in mild or serious side effects, its benefits outweigh the downsides, especially if you are using it to treat a serious medical condition such as anthrax.
